Food flops

May 28, 2008 at 4:13 am (Lessons better left unlearnt, Musings, humor) (, , )

yesterday my bus friends and i went to spencers plaza, an iconic mall in chennai..

spencers atrium

it was after a superb time at satyam, where we watched chronicles of narnia-prince caspian that we went there to fill our empty stomachs. budget was a big problem and we had just 100 rupees each to spare. but i decided to choose ambiance over everything else and finally got everyone to agree to go to a place called “noodle House”.

the place was good, had decent settings and was looking to be the best among surroundings. what a pity is it that looks can be deceptive.

the food sucked. aparajith wasnt able to eat more than half, while prassanna wasnt able fill his stomach. that was the different kinda reviews we received from our friends. the best part was my order. when the other five had ordered hong kong noodles, i decided to order dragon mushroom. it was the same cost as the other things and was sounding ambitiously delicious. then came a plate full of mushrooms – no noodles. every guy there had a hearty laugh. that was the only tasty thing there but i couldnt enjoy it that much cos the other guys didnt.

been to so many bad hotels, but this will stay as one of the worst.

V for Vendatta

May 20, 2008 at 1:44 pm (Uncategorized)

i saw this brilliant movie. had a lot to learn from it.. jus loved the introduction of the protagonist, that i mugged it up.. here it goes

Voilà! In view  a humble vaudevillian veteran cast vicariously as both victim and villain  by the vicissitudes of fate This visage  no mere veneer of vanity is a vestige of the vox populi now vacant  vanished However  this valorous visitation  of a bygone vexation stands vivified  and has vowed to vanquish these venal  and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious  and voracious violation of volition The only verdict is vengeance   a vendetta held as a votive not in vain   for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant  and the virtuous Verily  this vichyssoise of verbiage  veers most verbose So let me simply add that it’s  my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V

the other beautiful quotes are here for ur enjoyment..

Vi veri universum vivus vici (By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.)

ideas are bullet-proof

A revolution without dancing is a revolution not worth having

This may be the most important moment of your life. Commit to it.

One thing is true of all governments: the most reliable records are tax records

I am Back

May 9, 2008 at 5:29 pm (Musings, Uncategorized) (, )

yes my blog and readers, i am back. I decided to go to this blog only when i am really in a great mood. yes things are finally looking good and i seem to have a better view of life.

well my college is officially over with my last exams getting over, it was a real spine chilling feeling when i drew the last line on my answer paper and closed the pages. i hopefully shall clear my last three papers, and look forward to get settled in life.

on my CAT front (the exam i ve been working my ass off) i dunno what to say. recently got a call from IIM B but they  want me to fall under the non creamy layer. yeah NON CREAMY LAYER. i hate this whole creamy layer non creamy layer thing. my IIM call conversion has become a dream again. i need to try once again with all my force and determination the next year.

so my journey starts once again. i ve decided to monetize my other blogger blogs, but wud surely make it interesting and add bits of fun here and there for sure. so thats about it for now. ll look into life’s other mysteries and be up with another post pretty soon. and this time i shall keep my promise :)

GD was about creative capitalism. 9 ppl including a girl
i think they gave us 2 min to think, and i felt it was too short a GD.. 10min wasnt enuf to even make a mark. (many felt that it didnt last more than 7-8 min) i was not satisfied with my performance at all. came in 4 times of wich i was cut twice. :( and thankfully it wasnt a  fish market.)
PI
i was the second person to be interviewed.
sp: why dont u do an m.tech? y mba
me; i am better of planning and organising stuff that i think pursuing an mba wud be closer to my heart.
sp; which centre did u go for coaching?
me; time(thot i’d better be truthful)
sp; u are jus saying what they told u to say..
me; not like that sir… tried making a point but fell on deaf ears..
sp: but y man, u are already a manager? u have organized so many things and u don need to learn anythin.
me. no sir, the kind of competition and chalenges wud be higher.. and some crap like that.
sp. how ll u write ten?

sp; there are ten ones (as a matter of fact tone) if u are able to manage each individually, u ll be able to do them all..
me. what?? tried to make some sense but he jus said, i’m not satisfied…
thats all sp became silent..
for the rest of the interview he didnt say a word.. guess he thot he saw thro me.. i seriousl;y feel bad bout this part.
now tp’s turn
tp:what is a data warehouse..
me; told him a story. repeatedthe same points 3ice in different tones and stresses :)
tp: how is this data stored in the source database?
me:under diff schema. in a data warehouse it ll be stored under a unified schema.
tp: i don think thats how data is stored in a warehouse..
me……….
tp: u mentioned data mining. why is it done.
me: told him it was to extract info from large data. gave him an example of a small retail market, that i had learnt at coll.
tp:that i can see and tell itself. y do i ned to go for mining?
me: this is jus a small example i gave in. but in real life, data ll be of the size of terabytes. it is impossible to get info out of such big sources.
tp: imposible? whats imposssible.. gimme n example of such data then?
me; thot for a min and said that i cudnt think of an eg rite now
then he checked my markshets and asked what is cryptography
me; answered this part well. went on to add abt authentication also from security
tp; now  send an info, i add some knowledge to it then send it to the destined person then how ll u find if the data is tampered or not?
me; explained message digest, but dint use a tech term at all :( missed out on that
tp: u studied info coding techniques rit?
me; yes sir
tp; wat did u learn there?
me; we learnt abt how msg is coded, abt huffman coding, lempel ziv coding and things like that..
tp: things like that?? ( he found that i was not sur of the topic).
me; i started telling a story abt how computers communicate, and gave a lecture on that..
tp; some quest on that..
me, explained
tp; what is LPC? lineear predictive coding
me; gave a def of which i’m not sure of at all.. dunno if it was right..
tp; what are the characteristics of a voice signal?
me; (knew lpc was used in voice coding). i don have much of an idea abt it. but know that the voice freq is bet 20 hz to 20000 hz
tp; if i give a signal, how ll i know that it is a speech signal?
me; i don remembr sir..
tp: what do u think abt the sethu samudram project, ur opinion..
me; said a two points abt it, later realized that i jus gave facts and not my opinion

Remarks by the President at the Radio-Television Correspondents Association 57th Annual Dinner

February 5, 2008 at 3:40 pm (humor) ()

Washington Hilton Hotel
Washington, D.C.

9:40 P.M. EST

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all very much. Well, Lew, thank you very much. Laura and I are thrilled to be here. I appreciate the members of the press. I think you serve a very useful purpose, especially tonight.

As you know, we’re studying safe levels for arsenic in drinking water. (Laughter.) To base our decision on sound science, the scientists told us we needed to test the water glasses of about 3,000 people. (Laughter.) Thank you for participating. (Laughter.)

It’s good to see so many members of the Congress here. My fellow Texan, Tom DeLay, here at the head table. (Applause.) Lew asked me a little earlier if Tom ever smiled. I said, I don’t know, I’ve only known him nine years. (Laughter.)

Senator Lieberman is here. (Applause.) We all know Joe is an Orthodox Jew, so he does no work from sundown Friday until sundown Saturday. This has so impressed me I, myself, am thinking of converting. (Laughter.) So I don’t have nothing to do from sundown Saturday to sundown Friday. (Laughter.)

Most of you probably didn’t know that I have a new book out. Some guy put together a collection of my wit and wisdom — or, as he calls it, my accidental wit and wisdom. (Laughter.) But I’m kind of proud that my words are already in book form. So like other authors, I thought I’d read from it tonight. (Laughter.) It’s like the thoughts of Chairman Mao, only with laughs, and not in Chinese. (Laughter.)

Here’s one from the book — and I actually said this. (Laughter.) “I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully.” (Laughter.) Now, that makes you stop and think. (Laughter and applause.) Anyone can give you a coherent sentence, but something like this takes you into an entirely new dimension. (Laughter.)

Here’s another: “I understand small business growth; I was one.” (Laughter.) You know, I love great literature. (Laughter.)

I actually said this in New Hampshire: “I appreciate preservation. It’s what you do when you run for President, you’ve got to preserve.” (Laughter.) I don’t have the slightest idea what I was saying there. (Laughter and applause.)

Or how about this one: “More and more of our imports come from overseas.” (Laughter.)

Now, most people would say, in speaking of the economy, we ought to make the pie bigger. I, however, am on record saying, “We ought to make the pie higher.” (Laughter.) It is a very complicated economic point I was making there. (Laughter.) But believe me, what this country needs is taller pie. (Laughter and applause.)

And how about this for foreign policy vision: “When I was coming up, it was a dangerous world and we knew exactly who the they were. It was us versus them. And it was clear who the them was.” (Laughter.) “Today, we’re not so sure who the they are, but we know they’re there.” (Laughter and applause.)

John Ashcroft, by the way, attributes the way I talk to my religious fervor. In fact, the first time we met, he thought I was talking in tongue. (Laughter.)

Then there is my most famous statement: “Rarely is the question asked, is our children learning.” (Laughter.) Let us analyze that sentence for a moment. (Laughter.) If you’re a stickler, you probably think the singular verb “is” should have been the plural “are.” But if you read it closely, you’ll see I’m using the intransitive plural subjunctive tense. (Laughter.) So the word “is” are correct. (Laughter and applause.)

Finally, let’s see you wordsmiths out there diagram this sentence I said — this may sound a little west Texan to you, “but when I’m talking about myself and when he’s talking about myself, all of us are talking about me.” (Laughter.)

Now, ladies and gentlemen, you have to admit, in my sentences I go where no man has gone before. (Laughter.)

But in closing, the way I see it is I am a boon to the English language. I’ve coined new words, like, misunderstanding and “Hispanically.” (Laughter.) I’ve expanded the definition of words themselves, using “vulcanized” when I met “polarized,” “Grecians” when I meant “Greeks,” “inebriating” when I meant “exhilarating.” (Laughter.) And instead of “barriers and tariffs,” I said “terriers and bariffs.” (Laughter.)

And you know what? Life goes on. (Laughter.) My wife and my daughters still love me. (Laughter.) Our military still protects our shores. (Laughter.) Americans still get up and go to work. (Laughter.) People still go out and have fun, as we’re doing tonight.

I don’t think it’s healthy to take yourself too seriously. But what I do take seriously is my responsibility as President to all the American people. It’s the office I hold. And that is what I came tonight to tell you.

Thank you for inviting me, and thank you for your horspitality. (Laughter and applause.)

END 9:47 P.M. EST

Friendship across the border

February 3, 2008 at 2:39 pm (Uncategorized) (, , , )

This is the first time i’m wordpressing abt a person. During a recent event in our coll, we had a few delegates from across the border – pakistan.

his name was Ravi.

he is two years younger to me.

and I like him really very much.

and i like him really very much.

i don remember when we first met or where we first started our conversation. but the moment we did a spark flew, and before long we became best friends. i ve rarely felt such magic exist bet two frenz, the only time i’ve felt this b4 was when i became frenz with amrith and ganesh. before long we were two ppl who had known each other for yrs. what i liked abt him was his frankness and the innocence so uncommon to a guy doing 2nd yr in coll. i cant explain it but he had a very positive attitude abt the world and india in special.

he is indian by birth and paki by upbringing. he was the first person who dashed the misconceptions of what life is really like acrross the border. and who on his right mind would imagine that he’ll get a friend from a country traditionally viewed as the arch enemy of india??  when he was with his country mates, this topic was started as to who is responsible all this bad blood bet two sister countries. neither side was interested in letting down their nation nor wanted to risk blaming the other. i spontaneously said its the british who spilt us and made us enemies, fuck them. that was when the tension eased and the pakis weren’t uncomfortable a bit after that(except for the period outside our coll, but thats anothr story).

there is a lot to this guy. he is an avid blogger, and loves politics. he isnt biased unlike many political enthusiasts but very rational. a very intelligent guy ( a trait shared by every single best friend of mine) he shuold make it big someday, wish him well..

and the best thing he did in india was on Gandhiji’s death anniversary. he addressed a group of 50 students and set right our tainted views on pakistan and whats really happening there. Gandhiji must’ve blessed him mightily from above for that act. lets hope this is the start to many a Indo-Pak friendship that has to com in the future and lets hope that my new best friend doesnt fade away from my life..

Epitaphs

January 16, 2008 at 4:50 am (Inspiration, Lessons better left unlearnt, Musings, humor) (, , , , )

epitaphs try to capture an ocean and present it as a drop.. but while some fail, some even though they dont succeed get etched in our hearts forever.. here are a few i loved reading..

Robert Frost

“I had a lover’s quarrel with the world”

John Donne

“John Donne
Undone.”

Quaniaron Bellthing

“Well this was fun, let’s do it again sometime.”

Werner Heisenberg (the founder of Uncertainity principle)

“He lies here, somewhere.”

(This is a joke about the famous Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle, which implies that one may not know the position and momentum of a particle simultaneously.)

Kent

“Grim death took me without any warning
I was well at night and dead at nine in the morning”

King Leonidas of Sparta

“Go tell the Spartans, stranger passing by, that here, obedient to their orders, we lie.”

Dean Martin

“Everybody Loves Somebody Sometime” (the title of one of his songs)

John Laird McCaffery

“John
Free your body and soul
Unfold your powerful wings
Climb up the highest mountains
Kick your feet up in the air
You may now live forever
Or return to this earth
Unless you feel good where you are!
—Missed by your friends”

Osho

“Never born, Never died: visited the planet earth between December 11, 1931 and, January 19, 1990.”

Frank Sinatra

“The best is yet to come.” (the title of one of his songs)

Harold J Story

“Before you jump in here with me,
make sure you bring good memories.
For here they’re all we have to trade,
and where you are is where they’re made.”

Anon

“Tears cannot
Restore her:
Therefore I weep.”

Anon

“Blimey it’s darker than I thought in here.”

anon

“I finished before you in the human race.”

Mel Blanc

“thats all folks”

Gregory Allan Elliot

Don’t waste your short life reading epitaphs like this.
